The concept of the annex of the school gym in Špansko is defined by the location of the existing school within the broader context of the neighbourhood in which the school is situated and its relation to the surrounding roads.
The new school gym is purposely detached from the existing school building in such a way that it pushes the bulk of the building more towards the south in order to open the views towards the school park and playgrounds situated in the east. Such an approach enables the view of green areas. In addition, the new annex is situated on an axis with other public facilities in the area, enabling the new stand-alone object to become one of the main orientation points in the neighbourhood.
The gym fits into the zone of sports fields and redefines its appearance in the vertical and horizontal sense. Integrated into this zone, the new gym becomes a part of the terrain, taking away a part of the horizontal surface but compensating for it in many ways. The gym’s façade is a logical continuation to the series of sports fields that now become vertical, changing their xy plane into z and ending with the court on the roof of the gym. Sport courts extend over the interior, the façade and the roof.
Volume (school gym_annex) = sport (sports terrains) x 3
