Kindergarten is a perfect fertile ground for implementation and growth of the sustainability ideas for the future generations as from the very beginning children could be in contact with the new ideas by spending time on everyday basis within the building.
The main request for the new kindergarten was the ability to be implemented on any given location, which implicated specific approach to the design based primarily on modularity and flexibility. Organization of the kindergarten within specific sites is solved through permutation of assemblies with respect to adequate orientation, whilst the main atrium is treated as flexible space that connects all other spaces. Upgrading of the capacity is enabled by adding upper floor or adding units on the ground floor. For default site the kindergarten is designed as ground floor “closed box” with inner courtyards set on all four sides in order to achieve flexibility in positioning of the future entrance of the building.
Areal laminated system is specified as a main construction in dimensions most economic for the timber construction produced in Croatia. The other materials are chosen by the principle of the sustainability and adaptability for the Croatian market. In order to achieve better energy efficiency, the building is modified towards the requirements of the climate within specific area, whilst the final envelope of the building adapts to the cultural and urban expression of the site.
