square and park

Novigrad, Istria, Croatia
The big square and the park in Novigrad diocese are spaces that function almost autonomously of each other. However, some form of interaction is required. The main characteristic of the square as it stands today is dissolution into nearby alleys and green patches. The greenery within the area is set without any clear and logical interaction or organisation of the space. The whole area, which is relatively narrow and elongated, is dominated by the vertical church tower, which can be seen from most streets within the city. The antipode to the church tower is the proposed horizontal city porch, which primarily serves to define and unite the area of Veliki trg, the big city park and the new Novi gradski square, as well as the beach on the lower level.
The new porch generates the dynamics and keeps the whole area together. People are encouraged to navigate towards all the big horizontal surfaces within the given area. By placing it there, the space of the Big sqare is defined and the movement is continually directed towards the sea, ie.towards steps that lead to the beach. It specifies and organizes the area by defining borders of each space (Veliki trg, Novi gradski trg and the path towards the beach) and at the same time functionally integrates all of them.
The idea of the new porch and its position is historically justified as the old city lapidarium used to be there.
